Is this going to be a gift or a burden?

Is this going to be a gift or a burden?

This month my dear daughter surprised me with her decision: »Mom, I will be a vegetarian.« Wow… this is something you don’t really want to hear, especially if your daughter has trainings every day for few hours and everyone believes that she needs meat (and I must say here that we don’t eat a lot of meat, but still…).

It was the same day that I saw an article on my Facebook wall describing the traps, teenagers fall in, when deciding to go vegetarian. According to this article, more teenage »vegetarian« girls suffer from eating disorders and health problems, related to food than the »normal« group. It could be the first step to eliminating other foods as well. You can read the whole article HERE.

Actually no one was happy about it. Her swimming coach asked us about our food preferences, in school they noticed she’s not eating everything as she did before… And I really started to worry.

Do You Know Where You Are Going?

Do You Know Where You Are Going?

The other day we decided to spend the hot Sunday by the lake or the river. But we didn’t know which one:) So we looked on the map and found the lake not too far away we never visited before. We packed things and hit the road. We arrived only to find out that it is a great tourist destination, but not at all suitable for swimming. And we drove back looking for the perfect spot to have a picnic and to cool ourselves in the water. Which we didn’t find. And after driving around for almost 4 hours we all got frustrated and just wanted to go home to swim in our own pool in the backyard.

Just like when you are going on a trip, where you need to know the destination to decide about the road and stops and everything that comes in your way, you need to have direction for your family life too.

Summer Fun - Around the World...

A good traveler has no fixed plans, and is not intent on arriving. Lao Tzu

In the summer time and during the school holidays, families are more likely to travel and take some vacation time together. But until then, you can learn about new countries and see how it would be to spent the summer there from the comfort of your home.

Pretend that you are traveling around the world. With some help from the parents, internet and atlas find your way around the globe. Where would you go? How would you travel?

Collect colorful pictures from magazines of different destinations and make your own photo album. Find out what there is to see and to do.

Discover different possibilities for different places. If you have lots of time, collect more data for each country that you would visit. Learn about everyday life of the nations and dig up interesting facts.

Besides passing time and have some fun doing it, you will discover what you like the most – what kind of places would you go and what kind of activities would you do. After that it will be easier to imagine your dream vacations or your future destinations.

Spring just started – let’s grow and flourish our dreams

Spring just started - let's grow and flourish our dreams

Isn’t the start of the Spring more like the start of the new life than New Year?

I always liked the spring more. There is so much fuss around New Year that we easily forget our own goals and visions. Or we got caught in the New Years Resolutions that are made just because they are so much talked about. And we all know how easily we forget all about them.

But the spring represents new growth, bursting and evolving. Look at all the flowers and trees around you.

There are many traditions around the world that celebrate the spring. Starting with the Carnivals in February with different costumes that banishes away the Winter to Valentine’s day and Easter.

But here in Slovenia we have a traditional holiday similar to a Valentine’s day and it is called Gregorjevo (St.Gregory Day). It is the day, when in the Gregorian Calendar the spring begins. On the eve of the day, miniature boats and floating houses with lit candles are released into the river. It is said that all the problems and worries associated with the cold are washed away.

To see pictures of what I’m talking about, visit my friend’s photoblog.

So let’s release our worries and start to see our new beginnings. What parts of our life we want to grow this year? What do we need to do? Do you need any "fertilizers" – friends, teachers, books or courses to help you get there? It’s perfect time to set our goals and dreams for the future.

Let’s start growing…

When I grow up…

When I grow up...

I am talking a lot with my girls about their future, their goals, what they want their life to be.

And as Anja (the 13yr) seems to have no idea, or pretends not to be interested in this topic at all, the younger Tina has all figured it out.

She can tell how her house will look like – the pool, large garden, the bridge over the pool, large bedrom with wardrobe room, operated remotly from the computer, big kitchen,  everything…

She is also very determined (for now) that she will become a forensic. She watches all the shows like CSI, NCIS, Bones, she reads books from Agatha Christie… Last time we went to the library she borrowed the university study book about murders. And she read it.

Tina has birthday recently and she wanted a latent fingerprint kit for the present. She surfed the net (she did that before to make her vision board placemat) and found several that she wanted. The prices can be from 30$ to 1500$, so we negotiatated for smaller one, but we (secretly) bought her some additional stuff, like this tape and stack of notes (see under the tape).

Well, I’m not sure if that was good idea, since almost every room in our house is now a crime scene;) These are doors of her room on the picture. Our fingerprints are taken from every possible and impossible places, leaving behind the pink powder everywhere.

But… she is so much into this, that I strongly believe she might really become a forensic. She talks about it, acts it, pretends to be one already… what else can she do? Except grow up and follow her dream.

What about your kids? Do they know what they want out of life? Do they imagine their lives in 30 years?

If not, help them and start talking about it. Ask them what they want to be, when they grow up, where would they want to live, in what house, how will their family be like – how  many children they want, what pets will have, where will they go to holidays… Don’t limit your child in imagination. Remember that even 20 years ago, the phones were rare and we didn’t even know the cell phones, but today we can’t live without. So after 20 years who knows what the world be like. Maybe your child has an idea:)

Talking about the future and what might be  is great activity during long drives or when you wait somewhere.

But don’t take it too seriosly. Children can change their minds in the future.  And I’m sure they will be grateful someday if you help them remember their childhood dreams. As they might forget about them somewhere in the growing process.
