But how do you explain the principles and ideas of dreaming big, goal setting, meditation, visualization and gratitude to your child? Will he even be willing to listen? 9 Ways to Teach Gratitude by Example

9 Ways to Teach Gratitude by Example

“Example is the school of mankind, and they will learn at no other.” Edmund Burke

When we are teaching our children gratitude, it is important, that we are their role models. When they will see us do something, they will learn it better. It will no longer be just the theory that we preach but something that we actually do. And by the time they grow up, they would eventually do the same.

Include children in your activities, explaining them what you do to express gratitude.

Here are some activities that you can do together with your child (some on daily basis and some occasionally).

Spring just started – let’s grow and flourish our dreams

Spring just started - let's grow and flourish our dreams

Isn’t the start of the Spring more like the start of the new life than New Year?

I always liked the spring more. There is so much fuss around New Year that we easily forget our own goals and visions. Or we got caught in the New Years Resolutions that are made just because they are so much talked about. And we all know how easily we forget all about them.

But the spring represents new growth, bursting and evolving. Look at all the flowers and trees around you.

There are many traditions around the world that celebrate the spring. Starting with the Carnivals in February with different costumes that banishes away the Winter to Valentine’s day and Easter.

But here in Slovenia we have a traditional holiday similar to a Valentine’s day and it is called Gregorjevo (St.Gregory Day). It is the day, when in the Gregorian Calendar the spring begins. On the eve of the day, miniature boats and floating houses with lit candles are released into the river. It is said that all the problems and worries associated with the cold are washed away.

To see pictures of what I’m talking about, visit my friend’s photoblog.

So let’s release our worries and start to see our new beginnings. What parts of our life we want to grow this year? What do we need to do? Do you need any "fertilizers" – friends, teachers, books or courses to help you get there? It’s perfect time to set our goals and dreams for the future.

Let’s start growing…

“One Inspires Many”

"One Inspires Many"

“It is you (the athletes) who redefine the possible,” said IPC President Sir Philip Craven. “You succeed by focusing your minds, driving your bodies and achieving what many would consider the impossible.”

The main euphoria around the Winter Olympic Games is long gone, but there are another games going on, that should deserve more attention and even more support. Yes, I’m talking about Paralympic Games, that started yesterday.

I admit, I have almost no experience with handicapped people. But that doesn’t mean that I don’t see and appreciate them or their efforts to run normal lives. I am always amazed how much energy and positivity they have. I admire their attitude toward life, how they are really making every minute count and how they are enjoying one day at the time.

Use this worldly event to teach your child about the limitless dreams they can have. And how the impossible is just a word. It becomes impossible because we made it so. And reaching for the stars is not as easy but as reachable as sitting in front of TV. Yet it gives you so much more joy, pleasure and happiness of fulfilling your dreams.

I praise you all that are willing and prepared to follow your passion.

Look What I Have

Look What I Have

“Reflect Each Day On All You Have To Be Grateful For And You Will Receive More To Be Grateful For.” – Chuck Danes

Remember how children could brag endlessly in front of their friends about what they have. Sometimes it gets as far as the fight. And how humiliated we sometimes feel looking and hearing those things? When there is always something that others have and we don’t. And children can be ruthless too.

But can you make a fun of it and turn it to smething positive? Like teaching children gratitude.

Get them list all the things they really have.

Help them see beyond material things (although they will probably start with them). Put on a list all their friends, things in their neighborhood and the environment (like fresh air, water, woods …). Don’t forget to mention their rights (like freedom, schooling…) and their feelings (towards themselves, other people and from others to them). You can make a weekend project out of it or monthly challenge to come up with as many things as possible.

Let them know, how lucky they are to have all these. Show them how grateful can be for all they have. And that material things are least important in their lives.

Do you believe in your child?

Do you believe in your child?

I’m sure your immediate answer would be: “Of course, I do.” But do you really? Or do you believe in him only at certain occasions, whenever it is appropriate. Do you trust that he will do something that he’s never done before? Or that he is capable of doing something you think he is too young to do? Or that he can judge the situation by himself?

Whether you have small child or a teenager, there are always some tasks that you may find unsuitable or dangerous for the child.

I had a conversation with a friend the other day about children’s help in the kitchen.

I let my children help in the kitchen and cook the meals, even if I had to throw away some ingredients or even if we sometimes ate overcooked spaghetti or too salty salad. I trusted them with the knives at quite early age. They started with the salads and progressed to cooking and baking. Now when I am not at home they are totally capable of preparing the meal for the whole family. I am not afraid that they will cut themselves or that they will burn the house. Of course we had some accidents, but, hey, that’s life.

But on the other hand, my friend said that her daughter would really love to help, but she doesn’t have the time to wait for her, because the girl is too slow. By the time the poor kid does something, my friend gets the whole meal ready.

And this whole conversation makes me think, how we sometimes sabbotage our children with our own limiting beliefs. We do the things instead of them, because they are too small, too slow, too weak… We prepare their clothes for next day, we pack their bags, we cut their meat, we serve them food, we drove them to school, we study with them…

Believe and act as if it were impossible to fail. Charles F. Kettering

But actually we are doing it because we don’t have time, patience or positive beliefs in our children. We often think, that they would not do it themselves as good as we do. Oh, and sometimes it is too dangerous. I know, sometimes really is, but often times we are just protecting ourselves from more work and worries.

What are you doing yourself that you are limiting your child? Is it really helping your child? What message are you delivering to your child? Is it that he is not capable, competent, nor trustworthy? Or do you believe in him and give him a chance to prove it? Think about it!
